Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Florida Wednesday morning.

Hurricane Idalia has roared ashore in Florida, making landfall in the Big Bend region just before 8 a.m. Wednesday as a powerful Category 3 hurricane.

Idalia is the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the Big Bend region since 1896.

Life-threatening storm surge is a major threat.

Storm surge is already flooding most of the coastal Tampa Bay area, where the surge could reach 6 feet.

The storm surge could hit 16 feet near Cedar Key and the Big Bend area and could reach 5 feet in the flood-vulnerable cities of Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina.

Alexei Navalny’s Death Prompts Serious Questions as Biden Says Putin Is ‘Responsible’

J ailed Russian opposition leader and President Vladimir Putin critic Alexei Navalny, 47, has died in prison, the Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia said in a statement Friday.  "On Feb. 16, 2024, in correctional colony No 3, convict A A Navalny felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness," Sky News’ English translation of the Russian statement read.  "The institution's medical workers immediately arrived and an emergency medical team was called. All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, but they did not yield positive results. Couple killed at their Florida senior living community, person of interest in custody

Darryl Getman, 83, and Sharon Getman, 80, were "enjoying their golden years of retirement" when they were murdered, police in Florida said. A husband and wife in their 80s were murdered in their home at a Florida retirement community in what the police called a "random crime," and a female person of interest is now in custody. Darryl Getman, 83, and Sharon Getman, 80, were "enjoying their golden years of retirement" at Waterman Village in Mount Dora, Mount Dora Interim Police Chief Mike Gibson said at a news conference Tuesday. But "the golden years of Darryl and Sharon were tragically cut short by a ruthless and senseless double homicide," he said. Gibson was choked up as he told reporters, "I retired once.
