Author traces 'surprising history' of words that label women and their lives

In an interview, Dr. Jenni Nuttall gives examples of words she presents in the book and how her work with students and conversations at home inspired her to write it. Articulating a woman's journey may not be an easy task, but in her new book, “Mother Tongue: The Surprising History of Women's Words,” scholar Jenni Nuttall attempts to do just that. The book, released last month, is billed as an investigation of the words used to describe women , "from the dawn of Old English to the present day," according to the publisher's synopsis. Nuttall "guides readers through the evolution of the words we have used to describe bodies, menstruation, sexuality, the consequences of male violence, childbirth, paid and unpaid work and gender." A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) told ABC News on Sunday afternoon that the death of Maleesa Mooney, 31, on Sept. 12 is being investigated as a homicide, while the death of Nichole “Nikki” Coats, 32, on Sept. 10 is “an undetermined death at this point” and they will determine whether it could be investigated as a homicide after the L.A. County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner completes its report and determines her cause of death. The attack happened near the town of Cardwell on a remote stretch of the Jefferson River, a tributary of the Missouri River that's popular with anglers and recreational floaters. At least one otter swam up to the adult women at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday and attacked them, said Morgan Jacobsen with Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks. The women were able to get to shore, where one of them called 911, he said.
