Dangerous triple-digit heat baking Southwest and Southeast: Latest forecast

Millions are on alert this week as dangerous, unrelenting heat bakes the Southeast and Southwest.

More than 35 million Americans are on alert for dangerous heat that's baking the Southeast and Southwest.

On Monday, the temperature will hit about 109 degrees in Palm Springs, California; 108 in Las Vegas; 110 in Phoenix; 105 in Tucson, Arizona; and 98 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The unrelenting heat will stay throughout the week. By Friday, temperatures could soar to 115 degrees in Palm Springs and Phoenix.

This could be the worst heat wave ever for the Phoenix area. Phoenix has reached 110 degrees or above for 10 days straight, and could reach its record of 18 days straight.

In the Southeast, the heat is infiltrating cities from Dallas to Houston to New Orleans to Miami.

The heat index -- what the temperature feels like with humidity -- is forecast to climb above 100 degrees for much of this week in areas from Dallas to Miami.

Water temperatures are reaching about 90 degrees in Miami and 92 degrees in Key West, Florida. Miami on average hits its warmest water of the year -- 87 degrees -- in August.

Scholastic criticized for optional diverse book section

The children’s book publisher Scholastic is facing backlash for creating a separate, optional section centered on diverse stories. The decision by children’s book publisher Scholastic to create a separate, optional section for its elementary school book fairs for titles written predominantly by and about people of color and LGBTQ people is meeting resistance from groups that oppose book bans. The news comes as attempts to ban books spike across the country and as dozens of states continue to implement policies that restrict how the subjects of race, gender and sexual orientation are discussed in schools. “Because Scholastic Book Fairs are invited into schools, where books can be purchased by kids on their own, these laws create an almost impossible dilemma: back away from these titles or risk making teachers, librarians, and volunteers vulnerable to being fired, sued, or prosecuted,” Scholastic said about its decision to create a book section that schools can opt out of. Authorities say a 9-year-old girl who vanished during a family camping trip in upstate New York has been found safe Monday following a two day search MOREAU, N.Y. -- A 9-year- old girl who vanished during a family camping trip in up state New York was found safe Monday following a two-day search, authorities said. Charlotte Sena was located “in good health” and “a suspect is in custody” in connection with her disappearance Saturday evening, New York State Police said in a statement. Authorities didn’t immediately release further details. Hundreds of law enforcement officers, forest rangers and others searched a swath of upstate New York after the girl disappeared while riding her bicycle in Moreau Lake State Park, about 35 miles (60 kilometers) north of Albany, according to state police.
