Aerial photos show California's devastating flooding.

California has been experiencing extreme weather, including a "relentless parade of atmospheric rivers" -- storms that are long plumes of moisture stretching out into the Pacific capable of dropping staggering amounts of rain and snow. With the rolling series of storms have come powerful winds and high surfs.

The storms have caused mass evacuations, along with widespread power outages, downed trees and difficult driving conditions. Parts of California have received more than 3 feet of rain since Christmas, while the Sierra Nevada Mountains have had a record snowy start to the season, already surpassing seasonal averages. At least 17 people have died.

In the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles, two cars were swallowed by a sinkhole after a day of relentless rain on Jan. 10. Four people escaped, two with minor injuries.

Scholastic criticized for optional diverse book section

The children’s book publisher Scholastic is facing backlash for creating a separate, optional section centered on diverse stories. The decision by children’s book publisher Scholastic to create a separate, optional section for its elementary school book fairs for titles written predominantly by and about people of color and LGBTQ people is meeting resistance from groups that oppose book bans. The news comes as attempts to ban books spike across the country and as dozens of states continue to implement policies that restrict how the subjects of race, gender and sexual orientation are discussed in schools. “Because Scholastic Book Fairs are invited into schools, where books can be purchased by kids on their own, these laws create an almost impossible dilemma: back away from these titles or risk making teachers, librarians, and volunteers vulnerable to being fired, sued, or prosecuted,” Scholastic said about its decision to create a book section that schools can opt out of. Louisiana teens' deaths put spotlight on police chases

The deaths of two teenage girls in a Louisiana town have brought renewed attention to fatalities that happen during high-speed police chases NEW ORLEANS -- It was a tragically high price to pay for catching a suspected car thief: two innocent teenagers dead and a police officer jailed, facing serious charges for a car crash that resulted from the pursuit. Maggie Dunn, 17, and Caroline Gill, 16, who were cheerleaders for their high school in the southern Louisiana town of Brusly, died in the collision Saturday.
